Is Higher Education Worth the Price?

After a week full of reading, watching, and discussing the topic of higher education I almost still feel conflicted in my response to this question. I agree with the statements that were made in the article   Are Colleges Worth the Price that acknowledge the lack of quality in college institutions. Especially with the amount of debt students are willing to go through to receive an higher education the product they are paying for should have almost no flaws educationally. To ensure quality education I think it is important to do student surveys to gain feedback on classes and faculty, also surveys for faculty and administration to see if their needs are being met. I think surveys are a great way to understand what needs to change and what is working because it's information and data coming directly from the people who are participating in the programs.  Are Colleges Worth the Price also brings up tenure and how that can lead to poor quality. Since the teacher feels comfortable ...

Is Fast Food the New Tobacco? Ashley Pohlod

Is obesity a topic that should be regulated by the government or by personal responsibility?      I think the majority must come from personal responsibility and own desire to want to live a healthy lifestyle. In regards to the government I think it is important that we place emphasis on limiting unhealthy additives while making natural foods more accessible and affordable.      When reading Don't Blame the Eater By David Zinczenko he brings up the topic of fast food restaurants and the easy accessibility and how many Americans rely on the fast food industry. I would have to say that overall in America we value speed over quality and that is shown by the abundance of fast food restaurants we have. This leads so many people to obesity because it is the cheapest, quickest, and easiest choice that is provided in our country. It wouldn't be extremely strenuous to supply less processed food but it would take more time, effort, cost, and care and th...

Is Pop Culture Good For You?-Ashley Pohlod

My initial thoughts of this topic before I began reading was that television and social media can't be as educational as other methods that don't involve technology. As I began reading I am now convinced that these platforms can be extremely beneficial and in ways I didn't even consider. For example in Watching T.V. Makes You Smarter by Steven Johnson he described so many different ways our brains our working when watching t.v. By identifying characters and the plot our brain is very involved in not only figuring out the characters but also remembering them as the show continues into the next episodes. Since t.v. is enjoyable I didn't even think about how our brains are working even when we are watching our favorite t.v. show. I previously thought t.v. was only capable of being educational if it was a show designed to teach something like a kids interactive show.  Although I now view technology slightly different than I did before this assignment. I still believe that i...

Literacy History- Ashley Pohlod

When becoming literate my parents and teachers were definitely the ones guiding me in that process. I think that anyone who was literate inspired me because I did want to be capable of reading on my own. My parents supported me and every night my dad and I would read a book together before I went to sleep.  I was definitely encouraged because I liked reading and wanted to be able to read on my own. I wanted to also be able to understand what was going on in the book and then use my imagination to create what that might look like.  My earliest experiences with literacy that I can remember come from reading with my Dad and also interacting with books while at school. I would say reading with my Dad was something that significantly impacted my development with becoming literate. Since we would read every night my skill and understanding of words developed quickly. In my school setting growing up my teacher would often read to us and we would follow along. I also think liste...
